Atlantic City Local Information Known as "America's Favorite Playground", Atlantic City has developed a reputation as the quintessential vacation spot. Lying on a vast stretch of sandy white beaches, this resort is home to the world's first boardwalk, the first color postcards, saltwater taffy, and the Miss America pageant.
After going through a period of relative neglect and decline in the 1970's Atlantic City is currently witnessing a multi-billion-dollar rebirth. This revitalization is due in large part to the legalization of gambling and the array of casinos that sprang up as a result. Indeed, many of the 34 million visitors who visit this East Coast city every year stay at such casino resorts as Harrah's, Caesars, the Tropicana, the Showboat and the Trump Taj Mahal. Outside of the glitz and glamour of the casinos Atlantic City's biggest attraction remains its five miles of beachfront. Originally created in 1870, it's famed boardwalk, the first of its kind in the world, was initially conceived as a way of keeping sand out of the shoes of its gentrified vacationers, as well as away from the floors of hotels, restaurants and passenger cars. A "world-class visitor and meeting destination" in and of itself, Atlantic City is also home to championship golf courses, fine dining, boating, fishing, shopping, amusement parks and much more. Its Michigan Avenue boasts the 'Rose Walk' where rose-colored lights illuminate bronze plaques with inscriptions from past Miss Americas and another popular attraction, the Historic Gardner's Basin, features such water-activities as charter fishing, parasailing, cruises and more. Located in the city's inlet section the Basin showcases a variety of shops, a lively bar/restaurant, called the Flying Cloud, the ever-popular Seafood Festival and the Ocean Life Center, an aquarium and marine education facility that features live fish and marine life exhibits as well as interactive computer exhibits.
Although Atlantic City has come a long way, from its initial 19th century popularity, the sea breezes, sandy beaches and electric energy that made it popular over a hundred years ago continue to drive its popularity today. This 'Queen Of The Resorts" will certainly be around for a long time to come. |
